Infos and rules on the Cosplay Championship 2019

General information on the Cosplay Championship

Saturday is on the house!
The 30 finalists who make it through the online preselection will receive free admission to CCXP COLOGNE on Saturday, 29 June 2019.

You’ve gotta fly solo
Han Solo would be proud of you! The Cosplay Championship is a competition for singles. Every participant presents the costume alone. Duos or pairs are not allowed.

No quick outfit changes
You can’t change your cosplay between the online preselection and the contest. The project that you entered with must be the one that you appear in on stage at the Cosplay Championship.

Under close examination: the prejudging
Before the action starts on the big stage, the judges will have an opportunity to assess your cosplay in a separate area. They can ask you questions, and you’ll have a chance to show off your project in depth. Like the contest itself, the prejudging will take place on Saturday, 29 June 2019. The prejudging is scheduled for the 2-3 hours before the stage show. So please plan to arrive at the Cosplay Championship venue (Hall 7, Stand C-009) in costume by 1:00 p.m..

Cosplay and chill
There will be a waiting area during the prejudging and the time before the Cosplay Championship. This will be a space where our participants can have a seat and prepare. There will be drinks and refreshments. Each finalist can bring one companion into the waiting area. During the prejudging every finalist can be photographed by Cosplay photographer Arndt von Koenigsmarck in front of the CCXP COLOGNE photo wall in the waiting area.

The show must go on!
We’re often asked about the type of performance. Let’s be clear about it: we want you to present your cosplay – this is what should impress the audience and the jury. Dialogue, monologues or acted scenes are not part of it. Present yourself to your music in character or simply appear how you feel most comfortable in your cosplay. Your appearance will last about as long as it takes you to walk once across the stage and present yourself to the jury. Based on past experience, it’s about one to two minutes.
We’ll show you the marks where you can stand and pose in the best position for photographers and the jury when you arrive at the venue.

And then it’s too laaate!
You cannot enter the Cosplay Championship at the event. Our jury will select the 30 finalists in advance. Based on their preselection, there will be a list of replacements who will be informed if a finalist cannot make it to CCXP COLOGNE or has to pull out at short notice. In this case, the replacements will be contacted.
Turn on your out of the office!

Important!
If you have to pull out at short notice on the day of the event, please let the organisers know. It’s not a problem. Your place will be removed from the starting line-up. You are not allowed to send another cosplayer in your place or to give away your place on social media.

Even more important!
Any contestant who doesn’t arrive punctually in the waiting area at the start of the prejudging in their cosplay will unfortunately be disqualified. Their place will also be removed from the starting line-up. The same rule applies: you can’t give away your place to someone else or offer it online.

Thank you for the music!
A stage appearance to music is epic. If you’ve made it into the final 30, please email us an MP3 music file for the DJ to play for you. If we haven’t received your file one week before the start of CCXP COLOGNE, we’ll pick out some music for you. We can’t accept USB sticks at the event.

Holy rules

One cosplay per cosplayer
Even if you’ve got a huge collection and lots of awesome cosplay projects that you’re proud of: we want to see your finest creation! Friends or family wearing your second-best cosplay won’t be allowed to compete. Give another cosplayer the chance to present their work on stage.

“I’m 18 in two weeks!” Or: the age question
Yes, we know, the age question is an issue. But the Cosplay Championship is for 18s and over. Quite simply because of insurance and all the bureaucracy ... you know what it’s like. Please only enter if you’re already 18. And, just to clear things up, no, 17 years and 11 months isn’t 18. And there’ll be no secret switching places with an adult who’s made it through the preselection. Let’s not even think about it.

Let me through – I’m a professional!
Money, money, money! Do you make money from your cosplay or commissions? Perhaps it’s even your full-time job? Maybe you’ve trained in costume making or studied it at uni? Before you enter, have a good think about whether you really want to appear in a championship alongside amateur cosplayers.

Handmade with your own passion
Our Cosplay Championship is designed to recognise cosplayers that have created amazing costumes. If you haven’t made your cosplay yourself, have a really good think about whether you want to take part. If you’ve purchased or commissioned one part of your costume, for example a wig, but you’ve made everything else yourself, that’s absolutely fine! Simply enter a comment about this when you register so that the jury can take it into account.

Please put your 3D glasses on now!
3D printing is unstoppable in the cosplay scene. When you register, please tell us whether you created the file yourself and printed it, purchased the file or downloaded it free of charge, only printed yourself or just reworked it yourself. This will allow the jury to judge your work, and it means that we won’t have to rule out 3D-printed items. Reworking and painting 3D-printed items takes a good deal of work, and we recognise that.

Itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny!
CCXP COLOGNE is an event for the whole family. If your outfit covers less than a teeny-weeny bikini, then have a think about whether you really want to appear on stage in it.

It’s all mine!
If you’ve not only made your own costume but also come up with your whole costume design yourself, then you’re naturally welcome to take part in our Cosplay Championship as your own original character. Here’s the important bit: please send us some information on your inspiration and include some drawings, etc., with your entry so that the jury can get an idea of your work. This also applies to LARP costumes or if you’ve redesigned a well-known character.

Any questions? Ask!
If you should still have any questions about the Cosplay Championship extending beyond the application, please feel free to write Kes and Marcel an e-mail at ccxpcoscontest@gmail.com.

Inspection of accessories

We not only want CCXP COLOGNE to be a truly epic experience - we also want it to be a safe one! In order that we can ensure that for everyone, like at any other events of this kind, there will be costume design regulations and rules for accessories - please have a look at the costume design regulations (.pdf) before getting into your role.
